Philosophy of Education

It was great getting a chance to talk with everyone on Monday as well as have my new group contribute (Yeah- Adam, Amanda and Rob) and examine my philosophy of education. Together we created a strong philosophy that included:
  • The teacher is a facilitator, coach, mediator
  • The teacher is seen as student as well as the students are seen as teachers
  • The teacher is there to build bridges between the knowledge and skills to link the students to understanding.

I also have to say I really liked this quote from our reading this summer, " the teacher is a coach, providing scaffolding where needed, talioring mini lectures to clear up confusion or if things are going well, simply moderate discussion and allow students to figure out things on their own." I really felt as though this summarized how I would like to see my classroom.

I love how you phrased your second bullet point. It's somehow much clearer than simply saying that we're all on the same level, because we're not. We each take turns being the teacher, or the listener, or the facilitator.

I enjoyed Monday's discussion as well. Scaffolding is a really great image for education - we reach higher when we build upon strong foundations and receive support from those around us.

Being new to blogging I always find it interesting when I run across a comment from someone from the town I grew up in (Wells, ME). I also liked the second bulletin and struggle myself as an educator how to teach math with the philosophy that I am there to clear things up when they don't get it (ie. student centered teaching) not there to dispel every piece of information they need to know. I find this very difficult as the students I have, have grown up in the info in info out type of educational environment and often rebel against this "new" method. There are also so many processes in math that need to be learned that are hard to "show" any other way then old school lecture. Under the pressure to have common exams it makes the task of mentor vs. authority even harder. Open to suggestions.
